Electrostatic analyzer

Exhibit no. 855

An electrostatic analyzer separates charged particles according to their ratio of translational energy to charge. It consists of two curved plates of equal and opposite potential that provide radial electric field. The analyzer is energy focuser, where an ion beam is focused for energy. Electrostatic analyzers are combined with magnetic sectors to significantly improve their resolving power.

The electrostatic sector shown in the picture comes from a ZAB-EQ mass spectrometer (BEqQ geometry) manufactured by VG Analytical LTD. in 1986. The plates are machined from stainless steel and ground to an accuracy of 1 micron in the optical gap. The sector plates are located spatially using six precision ceramic balls. This device weighs 39 kg.
