Matrix Suppression Lens

Exhibit no. 281

MALDI spectra contain a large amount of low mass matrix ions, which can have a detrimental effect on the ion detector. To avoid detector saturation, lenses suppressing the signal for the first parts of the scans are used.

The exhibit is a matrix suppression lens from the TofSpec 2E MALDI-TOF spectrometer manufactured by Micromass in the 1990s. It consists of four deflection pillars with electrical connectors. The amount of time that the suppression takes place was set via the software; the value was in mass units. The matrix suppression lens was placed between the ion source optics and the ion gate.
